Dr. Sara Winter is associate professor of cinema studies and religion at Lang College, New York. She has made several documentary films, including the acclaimed piece, In Tolstoy’s Living Realm. This film is praised for its poetic ability to show Yasnaya Polyana as a character in much of Tolstoy’s fiction.
Winter grew up in rural central Michigan and the south side of Chicago, then pursued studies at Bryn Mawr College and received her PhD from Union Theological Seminary with a dissertation in biblical studies. She then filmed several documentary films, oftentimes connecting film, poetry and religious exploration.
Winter developed an interest in Russia and Russian culture long ago, and has actually walked the same route Tolstoy walked from Yasnaya Polyana to Moscow – twice!
Join us on Friday, November 16 to hear her perspective on filming Tolstoy’s life and legacy!
