Lecture "Poetry in/as Cultural Diplomacy" by Christopher Merrill Poet, Author, Distinguished Member of the U.S. National Council on the Humanities
We are excited to welcome back U.S. poet, Christopher Merrill! Merrill has published six books of poetry, including Watch Fire, for which he received the Lavan Younger Poets Award from the Academy of American Poets. His other works include five non-fiction books, several edited volumes and books of translations. His own writings have been translated into twenty-five languages, his journalism appears widely, and his honors include a Knighthood in Arts and Letters from the French government! Merrill is also a member of the National Council on the Humanities and directs the International Writing Program at the University of Iowa.
Mr. Merrill has traveled to many countries around the world, sharing his knowledge and expertise in poetry and creative writing, and leads an immensely popular cross-cultural exchange program of writers, Between the Lines.
Merrill will speak about how poetry (and literature) can serve as an important bridge between nations in cultural diplomacy.
