Dr. Robyn Quick, Fulbright Scholar, Towson University
Classical Russian theater has long been popular in the United States. Both major and lesser known theaters regularly produce classical works by Chekhov, Dostoevsky and even Bulgakov. But what about contemporary Russian plays?
Towson University, partnering with the Center for International Theatre Development, has made sure to introduce contemporary Russian playwrights to American audiences in their New Russian Drama Project. This project, headed by Dr. Robyn Quick, has supported new English-language translations of dozens of contemporary Russian plays, along with staging them and promoting them to high-level theater professionals for further distribution.
Please join us to learn more about this fantastic project from Dr. Quick herself, who is in Moscow this semester on the prestigious Fulbright Scholarship. This lecture will be a perfect continuation of the Broadway lecture held with Jack O’Brien and Margo Lion recently at the American Center.
Dr. Quick is a professor of the theatre studies at Towson University, where she teaches courses in theatre history and dramaturgy. She holds a Ph.D. in theatre studies from the University of Michigan, as well as a Master’s degree in theatre from Kent State University. She is the 2010 recipient of the Elliot Hayes Award for Excellence in Dramaturgy from the Literary Managers and Dramaturgs of the Americas. She is currently the recipient of the prestigious Fulbright Scholarship and is currently in Russia this semester conducting research.
